Now that I have your attention, it’s meteor showers, not rain showers. In mid-July, the Earth begins its annual voyage through the debris left behind by the Comet Swift-Tuttle. The grains of dust and ice left behind by the comet will collide with the Earth’s atmosphere creating “shooting stars” or meteor showers.
The meteor shower, which is known as the Perseid Shower, begins on July 17th this year and lasts until August 24th with the peak display occurring on August 12th-13th. This shower is generally believed to be the most prolific of the year and at its peak, somewhere between 50 and 60 meteors per hour will streak across the sky!
The best view of the Persieds will be seen a couple of hours before dawn as it is an early morning shower. Trying to view the showers at night will be complicated by the light of the moon. Set your alarm for 4:00 AM at least one morning towards the middle of August and enjoy your morning shower!
