We are Tired, Weak, Sick, and Eating Crap?: Monday Motivation February 26, 2024

We are tired, weak, sick, and eating crap! I’m an athlete and have always loved sports, but I got interested in fitness at age twelve when my Mom died at age 47. Then, I got interested in nutrition when the doctors said I’d never get into the Naval Academy because of allergies. Although I’ve achieved much physically, I’ve neglected other areas, like sleep, or maybe that was just Marine life. Physical fitness is an often neglected area of our lives that significantly affects our health, as witnessed by our 42 percent national obesity rate. I don’t stay fit to live longer; God has that timeline, but because being physically fit is about quality of life. I want to work in my yard, travel with my wife, go fishing and to Church, help leaders, and someday play with grandkids. Our bodies are the vehicles by which we do all else. Being sick is a huge time waster, and I have things to do—a cold costs days in productivity due to lack of focus and downtime. Of course, anything more serious can completely upset your entire plan and cost you money in medical care. I have physical limitations, and you may, as well, so I do what I can daily. It does include heavy deadlifts, but some days are heavier than others. A recent study says that a sedentary lifestyle is worse for your health than smoking, so get up and move. “Most health and fitness experts would agree that walking 2 miles a day is enough for overall health and to reduce the risk of lifestyle diseases such as obesity, diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, and certain cancers.” Build your muscles with some resistance training. Muscle mass has a direct correlation to health and resilience. Eat naturally and cut out sugar; sugar is the devil. Get seven to nine hours of sleep per night. Drink 2-3 quarts of filtered water daily; chlorine is poison. Get an annual physical and manage any chronic conditions. Being healthy and fit makes you better in everything you do, saving you time and money. So, instead of just setting goals to lose weight or get in shape, adopt a unifying principle that includes fitness and health. Now, put down the soda and get off the couch!
