International Whiskey Day / Spanish Paella Day

International Whiskey Day

March 27

This day was created to celebrate whiskey, a Gaelic word meaning “water of life.” Both the “Whisky” and “Whiskey” words are correct. Whiskey is specific to Irish, and Whisky is Scotch. The first blended whisky in the world, was a mixture of malt and grain produced under the name Green Stripe in 1860. Jack Daniels learned how to make Whiskey from a Lutheran minister at the age of 6. An incredible one billion bottles of scotch are exported from Scotland every year.

Spanish Paella Day

March 27

Paella is one of the best-known dishes in the Spanish cuisine and comes primarily from the Valencian region of the country. Paella takes its name from the wide, shallow traditional pan used to cook the dish on an open fire. Paella means “frying pan” in Valencian. Originally, Paella consisted of round grain rice, bajoqueta and tavella (varieties of green beans), rabbit, chicken, sometimes duck, garrofó (a variety of lima or butter bean), and optionally snails. Artichoke hearts and stems may be used as seasonal ingredients. Olive oil is used as a base, and saffron and (sometimes) whole rosemary branches are used as seasoning.
