Are You Still Having Fun?

It’s sometimes easy to forget how much fun life can really be – regardless of your age. Joyful pursuits are what make us feel vibrant, engaged and connected. The world becomes brighter and more inviting when we give ourselves permission to play! These thoughts are the beginning of a wonderful article from Great Senior Living titled, “Why play is important and How to do More of It.”

Every senior deserves to pursue enjoyable pastimes that will “make him or her laugh, lose track of time and feel like a goofy kid at heart.”  Scientific studies have shown that play and fun activities for seniors can have several major health benefits including keeping your brain sharp, making new friends and strengthening existing relationships, improving your mental and emotional well-being and extending your life and improving your physical vitality. Wow!  I think having fun is a win-win situation.

Passive activities like watching TV might be entertaining, but are they fun? It would be better to do some things in which you are an active participant. Think about your interests, talents and capabilities and look for activities that would be just right for you. Perhaps you have some hobbies that bring you satisfaction and joy. Keep on with your hobbies and consider inviting friends or grandchildren to join you.

Here’s the most important thing: You get to decide what’s fun for you. Even if you are not as spry as you used to be, you can still find lots of opportunities for playing and having fun. “So pay attention to your heart. Keep doing anything that makes it feel lighter and causes you to smile.”
