Celebrate Constitution Week!

You and your family have the perfect opportunity to do some celebrating the week of September 17th through the 23rd, the official observance of the U.S. Constitution beginning with the anniversary of the signing of the document.

Start off your week-long celebration by participating in a campaign called “Bells Across America”. Everyone is encouraged to ring bells at 4 o’clock PM because that is the time the delegates to the convention signed the newly written Constitution of the United States of America.

How long has it been since you “studied” our Constitution? This week would be a great time to have a little refresher course! There are lots of books written on the subject for people of all ages. One that does a great job of explaining it in kid-speak is called A More Perfect Union-The Story of Our Constitution written by Betsy and Giulio Maestro. It does a lovely job of showing today’s children how our Constitution was created. I think you and your kids would really enjoy reading this book together!

Wear red, white and blue, fly your flag and eat some broccoli and kebabs! WHAT??? In my researching of the Constitution, I discovered that in 1787, while the delegates were huddled up working on the Constitution, two new foods were all the rage in Philadelphia – broccoli and kebabs. George Washington and Benjamin Franklin probably ate them for dinner at the nearby tavern. (If broccoli isn’t your thing, hot dogs will be just fine.)

The point is that our Constitution is a masterpiece that has worked with only a few changes here and there for 234 years. Now that is something to celebrate!
