Classical Music Month / Pink Cadillac Day

Classical Music Month

Month of September

Classical Music is thought to have begun in the Gothic Period (1100 – 1450). It was primarily liturgical music as characterized by Gregorian Chants, named after Pope Gregory I. During the Baroque (1500 – 1700) period, most usual works were concerto’s and early operas (often related to mythology). The most prominent composers were Johann Sebastian Bach, George Frederick Handel, and Antonio Vivaldi. The Classical period, when most works were concertos, symphonies and sonatas, was during the 1700 and 1800s by composers like Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, and Shubert. That was followed by the Romantic period of Tchaikovsky, Wagner, Verdi, and Brahms during the 1800s to early 1900s. The Modern or Contemporary era (through the present) produced classical music by Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, and George Gershwin.

Pink Cadillac Day

September 1

Possibly the two most famous Pink Cadillacs were Elvis Presley and Mary Kay Ash. In early 1955, Elvis bought his first Cadillac, a 1954 Fleetwood Series 60, which was pink. The car provided transport for Elvis and the Blue Moon Boys, but after the failure of a brake lining, was destroyed in a roadside fire between Hope and Texarkana, Arkansas in June 1955. It was restored and is now on permanent display at Graceland. The renowned Pink Cadillac of Mary Kay Cosmetics originated when Mary Kay took out her compact at a Dallas dealership and said match the color of the rouge, which was “Mountain Laurel.” In 1969, she rewarded her top five sellers with a brand new, blush-colored Cadillac Coupe de Ville. The consultant isn’t gifted the car outright, it’s a two-year “co-op lease” paid for by Mary Kay, and when the two years is up, the consultant can elect to sell the car back to the dealership or purchase it herself.
