Dad Camp 2020 – Pandemic Edition

374

In 2018 my wife and I began a tradition of putting together getaways with our little girls, now ages 6 & 9. The idea is to give one spouse a break while the other spouse takes the girls away for a weekend of fun and excitement. This fun idea quickly turned into a competition to see who could put together the best trip as voted on by our travelers.

In 2018 my girls and I rented an RV and camped at Lake Tawakoni. Last year we used the travel site Pack Up + Go for the most amazing experience ever, not knowing where we were going until the morning we arrived at the airport. We traveled to San Diego and had a crazy full itinerary including zoo passes, beach trips, live theater shows and much more. The Pack Up + Go experience was so good I had planned on doing it again, but the Covid-19 Pandemic changed my plans. I wasn’t ready to load my girls on an airplane yet, so new plans were needed.

The girls and I looked over lots of options and decided to rent a condo in Horseshoe Bay, TX. If you haven’t visited Horseshoe Bay, I recommend you add it to your weekend getaway list. The resort and town are on the south side of Marble Falls on Lake LBJ. The resort itself gives you the choice to rent a hotel room or condos ranging from 1-4 bedrooms. Our place had 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a balcony that overlooked the lake, a kitchen, dining area and living room. It was perfect!

Through the resort and condo, we had access to the Yacht Club swimming pool, private condo pool and the main resort pool. We also had beach access to the lake and a marina where we could fish, swim and rent a boat, but, with a 6 and 9 year old, swimming as much as possible every moment of every day was the agenda. (The August Texas heat made swimming even more enjoyable!) In one day, we swam at two different pools, in 2 areas of the lake, in the Colorado river and went tubing. We exhausted ourselves swimming, but it was so much fun.

Horseshoe Bay Resort also has an incredible putt-putt golf course with par 3, 4 and 5 holes which include sand and water traps on real grass. They have exotic birds, tortoises and so much more to do even in the midst of a pandemic. Dad Camp Year 3 was a raging success! I’m not sure yet what’s in store for 2021. Will traveling be safe and easy again? Will there be a vaccine? Will we make our way back to Pack Up + Go? No matter the answers to those questions, I have no doubt it will be memorable once again.
