Earth Day 2020

Earth Day 2020 is the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. It was established by some people who were concerned that the earth’s environment was being harmed by things that we were doing like wasting water, cutting down trees to make room for factories and polluting our rivers, oceans and air. They realized that the people of the earth needed to make some changes to help keep our earth in good shape not only for now, but also for future generations.

It is always a good idea to be reminded of the importance of taking care of the earth every April, but it is an even better idea to find out how we can help. We can celebrate and protect the planet at the same time! Look at these activities that can be done all year.

Recycle and Repurpose

The National Geographic Kids site suggests that kids can become “waste warriors”. That means that before you throw something in the trash like plastic bottles and toilet paper tubes, think about whether that object can be recycled or repurposed. How about using those items to make an awesome telescope or a garden planter?

Plant a Tree

Trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen for people to breathe. They also provide homes and food for many animals. Sadly, many billions of trees are cut down each year, so you could plant a tree to help replace those that are gone.

Turn Off the Lights

Your children could be the light guards at your house. Explain that it is wasteful to have the lights on when the sun is out!  Perhaps your older children could do some research on how the lights in your house get their power.
