A few years ago, my husband and I tried something new and loved it — Ghost Tours! So do we really expect to see ghosts? No, but we have a lot of fun and learn a great deal about a city.
Williamsburg, VA hosts nightly ghost tours in Colonial Williamsburg, the historic district that is also a living museum. Visitors meet at dusk for a walking tour around and through the old buildings. Shadows of past inhabitants can be seen floating in windows of the deserted building before visitors enter to hear the “ghost” come tell his/her story. The information your guides and the ghosts provide is based on factual data and makes history come alive. Multiple companies provide Colonial Williamsburg tours, so check out reviews and choose the one that fits your interest.
Louisville, KY hosts another ghost tour. Again, you meet at dusk. (After all, what self-respecting ghosts appears during the day?) The guide leads you through the older section of Louisville telling you stories about the ghost sightings that have happened through the years. One featured ghost saved the life of the house’s occupant, so not all the ghost stories have macabre endings. This 90-minute walking tour provides history and fun stories.
We have also taken ghost tours in York and Bath England that have much longer histories and so more ghosts than cities in the U.S., but you don’t need to travel far to experience a ghost tour. Although I have not had the privilege yet of taking it, Waxahachie has its very own two-hour ghost tour that explores the downtown area. According to the website, you will discover the “past that history books tend to ignore. Gunfights, Lynchings, Murders, and Brothels.” Click here if you’re interested in booking a tour or finding out more!
In addition to Waxahachie, the Dallas-Fort Worth area features many ghost tours. Grapevine, Denton, Lewisville, Fort Worth Stockyards, and Granbury are just a few that offer opportunities to learn history…and perhaps see a ghost!
We’d love to hear from someone who has taken local ghosts tours. Please leave your comments below to help others decide which tours to take during this haunted time of year!
