Her Story: Arthelia Harris

A great spot to treat a sweet tooth

If you have a sweet tooth or are in desperate need of a sugar fix, then it’s time to discover a charming shop in downtown Waxahachie known as The Dessert Spot.

Arthelia Harris opened this business with her husband, Elmo, in September 2018, and it has quickly become one Waxahachie’s local gems. With snickerdoodle cookies, sugar cookies, chocolate chip, cheese cakes, ice cream, brownies, lattes, coffee and more, there’s a treat to be found for any taste at its location in the corner of the historic Rogers Hotel.

Harris said she began baking 30 years ago as a hobby for family during holidays.

“Most of my recipes are passed down from family that I’ve adapted to make my own,” she said, noting the shop’s best-sellers are the butter sugar and oatmeal-chocolate chip cookies, with her personal favorites, the butter sugar ones.

It was Harris and her husband’s love for fellowship that led them to open The Dessert Spot, where they staff the counter as well as handle kitchen duties.

“The community is great,” she said of their having set up shop in Waxahachie. “I love the downtown and the nostalgia of a slower-paced community.”

Asked about what makes The Dessert Spot’s offerings so good, Harris said she makes everything from scratch. She’s able to cook several dozen cookies at a time in their large commercial oven and, while she couldn’t recall an exact number, she says she’s baked as many as several hundred cookies in a single day. The baking is based on demand so as to ensure her patrons always have the freshest cookies possible, she said.

Her love and commitment toward baking is also reflected in The Dessert Spot’s support of the community and, more specifically, its local artists. The Dessert Spot regularly hosts exhibits for local artists and performances for singers who are trying to make a name for themselves.

“I think it is important to support local artists,” Harris said.

The Dessert Spot is open from 10 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Thursday and from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday-Saturday at its location at 100 N. College St., Suite 103. To learn more about local events, visit the official Facebook page or its website, DessertSpotTexas.com. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Dessert Spot’s main dining room is closed; however, the business is still doing takeout and accepting call-in orders for curbside pickup.
