In The Spotlight: Oreos

On March 6,1912, the Oreo cookie was born! It was made by the Nabisco Baking Company and consisted of two round chocolate biscuits filled with vanilla cream in the middle. It was basically like the Oreo cookie of today; only the design on the biscuit was different.

Oreo cookies can be found in over one hundred countries around the world, but are most popular in the U.S. At this time, there have been over 491 billion Oreos produced and sold in the U.S. It is also interesting to note that Oreos are egg and dairy-free.

One more little Oreo trivia fact: Over half the people who eat Oreos do the “Twist, Lick, Dunk Ritual”.

Through the years, Nabisco has released special Oreos like Mystery Oreos, Love Oreos, Lemon Oreos and even Chocolate Wasabi Oreos. The latest “craft’ Oreos are Lady GaGa Oreos and Java Chip Oreos. It seems like there is an Oreo for everyone!

Oreos are also a great ingredient in many desserts. They can become a crust, a filling or a topping. Taste of Home has an article called, “20 Oreo Recipes to Satisfy Your Cookie Cravings” which has the recipes and pictures to bring out the cookie monster in you!
