Love Your Neighbor – May

Respect

“Honor your father and your mother” – Jesus (Matthew 19:19)

We have heard this verse before and it is a great commandment by our Lord that establishes a basis for RESPECT.

Definition of RESPECT:

“A feeling of deep admiration for someone or something elicited by their abilities, qualities or achievements.”

One of the themes of “Love Your Neighbor” takes the word RESPECT to another level. If we honor our father and mother, that sets the stage for RESPECT in other areas as well.

“Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.”

1 Peter 2:17, NIV

Is there someone you deeply admire? What are their character traits that create a respect for that person? Is it their abilities, qualities, or achievements?

Big Question: Can you accept somebody for who they are even though they’re different from you or you do not agree with them or their views?

Here are 5 ways to “Love Your Neighbor” by showing respect:

1) Listen

2) Encourage

3) Congratulate

4) Be helpful

5) Say “please” and “thank you”

Challenge: Love your neighbor by putting one of these traits into action this week and see what a positive reaction you get!
