Christ is Risen! Indeed He is Risen! We will say these words countless times in our Church on Saturday night and the days following the most sacred and joyous of Christian Feasts. Although a lifelong Christian, I didn’t realize the joy of the Paschal Feast until I experienced a devoted Lent when I became an Orthodox Christian 24 years ago. It was more than the discipline of Lent; it was the example. Christianity spread through the example of Saints and Martyrs before the Bible existed. St Athanasius, the Patriarch of Alexandria, first listed the scriptures to be considered doctrine in 367, and the Guttenberg Bible was printed in 1455. That means for 300-plus years, the faith and the Church were spread, built, and led by spoken word and deed, and for another 1700-plus years led by the Saints in doctrine and example to become the world largest religion. Of course, only our Lord set the ultimate standard for suffering and sacrifice by trampling down death by death. My priest once told me we are called to different vocations. My purpose is to build leaders of consequence for service in our Churches, communities, and businesses. Leadership by example is essential to the leadership vocation. Modeling behavior sets the standard for those we lead and provides an example for the apprentice leader. While I am unworthy to wash His feet, I will continue to follow the example of the Saints and my vocation.
