Monday Motivation – March 20, 2023

Last week I told you some of my favorite time management principles, and several included writing things down. That’s because unwritten goals are called dreams. Dreams are great, but there is no commitment to a dream, and most dreams don’t include actionable plans. Goals are future events directed to a desired result. So to bring our dreams to reality, we need to write them down, and yes, many studies tell us why. Two big reasons are that writing a goal is a commitment our brain begins to work on subconsciously, and we organize our most important resource, time.

To manage events, keep track of projects and tasks, and regularly review your vision, mission, values, and goals, you must have them close. Using a planner with scheduling capability and a place to take notes and keep important contact information is critical. I use one that acts as my wallet that I can carry with me everywhere. The calendar allows me to view and schedule a year in advance, and the monthly insert enables me to plan a day down to the half hour from 0630 am to 9:30 pm. It also allows me to capture mileage on my truck and expenses. All of these capabilities come in handy for billing and tax records. I like it because I can journal and, if necessary, carry a supplemental notebook for particular topics. Of course, I have to integrate it with my phone and electronic calendars.

If you use your iPhone or another portable electronic device, ensure you can carry it in your workspaces. Don’t fool yourself into believing that surfing social media is planning or doing work.

Whatever you use, take journal notes daily about progress towards your goals and insights that may become goals. Create a system that allows you to plan and capture progress notes and contact information. If you still need to get something, find one this week.
