Leaders integrate life and work.

There are two commonly used phrases I don’t like; “work-life balance” and “follow your passion.” I don’t like them because I think they are misleading. I’ve never met anyone accomplished in a field who didn’t put enormous effort and time into becoming an expert, even to the exclusion of other areas of their lives, for a time. So while I don’t like “work-life balance,” I believe we must integrate our lives, especially our spirit, mind, and body.
The most powerful concept to integrate our lives is congruity. Congruity is experiencing harmony and appropriateness with the events in our lives. Doing the most important things at the appropriate time helps us concentrate our power and achieve what we value most. Lack of congruity creates the most significant obstacle to achievement and fulfillment, which I call the values-performance gap. When our life and performance do not align with our highest values, we lose focus, stall, and get frustrated, which gets painful and worse. So you have to know your highest values and then put your passion into those values and the supporting mission and goals.

So, this week, pray when it’s time to pray, exercise when it’s time to exercise, be with your family during family time, study when it’s time to study, work when it’s time to work and rest when it’s time to rest. See how that works for you.
