
National Authors’ Day
November 1
Originating in the late 1920s and later adopted as a special day of celebration by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, the Department of Commerce officially designated National Authors’ Day in 1949 to fall on November 1st each year. It is suggested on this special day to read a book, reread a favorite novel or write an author expressing your gratitude for their work.
Sistine Chapel Ceiling Unveiled
November 1, 1512
After four years of work by Michelangelo painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, it was opened to the public on this day in 1512. The ceiling is comprised of 9 different fresco paintings depicting scenes from the old and new testament featuring more than 300 figures. On average, 25,000 people visit the Sistine Chapel every day.
