The Berlin Wall is Opened
November 9, 1989
A 36-mile-long, 11-foot-high wall separating East and West Berlin was called the Berlin Wall. It was erected in 1961 and was a physical symbol of the Cold War days when Russia was controlling many countries forming the Communist Bloc. After prolonged civil unrest in those countries, especially in Poland, Hungry and East Germany, the wall was opened for passage on November 9, 1989.
