National Golden Retriever Day / National Feed the Birds Day

National Golden Retriever Day

February 3

According to the American Kennel Club, the Golden Retriever is the 3rd most popular dog in the United States (Labs are #1, German Shepherds are #2). They are known for their kind temperament and intelligence. They are one of the most common breeds of therapy dogs and are great dogs around children because of their easy-going personality. They were bred in the Scottish Highlands in the late 19th century. Their coats are two-layers: the top wavy coat is water-resistant while the undercoat is soft and warm. Once fully grown, these dogs can stand as tall as 21-24 inches at their shoulders, and can weigh upwards of 60-75 pounds.

National Feed the Birds Day

February 3

This day is celebrated in early February, usually the coldest time of the year in many parts of the U.S. and offering the least amount of food for wild birds. The best foods to feed birds are sunflower seeds, thistle, nuts, suet, and millet. More than 40% of Americans feed birds.
