National Good Samaritan Day

March 13

Good Samaritan day was created to highlight the parable in the Bible (Gospel of Luke) telling of a Samaritan who befriended a Jewish traveler in need along the roadside.  Traditionally, Samaritan and Jews did not like each other, however, the parable emphasizes the need to help others supersedes everything else. Today is a day to love thy fellow man.

National K9 Veterans Day

March 13

The United States K9 Corps were created on March 13, 1942. Since then the dogs officially became the part of military service. The earliest recorded use of dogs in times of war dates to around 600 BC. War dogs were used extensively by the Romans, Greeks and Egyptians. When the military began training dogs during WWII, they used more than 30 different breeds. However, over the years the list of acceptable breeds has been reduced to just a handful – the German Shepherd, Dutch Shepherd, Belgian Malinois, and Retrievers. There are around 2,500 military dogs in service today, and approximately 700 serving overseas.
