National Sunglasses Day / International Pineapple Day

National Sunglasses Day

June 27

Sunglasses were “invented” 2,000 years ago. The Inuit (Eskimos) created snow goggles from animal bone, leather, and wood. There were small slits that allowed only the tiniest of light through. This effectively shielded the eyes from the blinding glare of sunlight reflected off the snow. Italian eyeglass conglomerate Luxottica owns nearly every popular brand of sunglasses sold worldwide as well as Sunglass Hut. Luxottica’s brands include icons like Ray-Ban and Persol in addition to a large portion of fashion brands that have licensing deals with companies like Tiffany & Co, Prada, Chanel, D&G and many more. Known for being eccentric from head to toe, Sir Elton John is hardly seen without a pair of funky shades, making him the ultimate fashion icon. It is believed that his collection of sunglasses accounts for over 1,000 pairs, making his inventory one of the most exclusive collections.

Some interesting facts about pineapples are they regenerate! You can plant pineapple leaves to grow a new plant. Pineapples contain the bromelain enzyme which can break down proteins, so you can use them to tenderize meat. Hawaii produces about 1/3 of all pineapples in the world and they take about 18-20 months to become ready to harvest. Pineapples are native to South America before Christopher Columbus discovered them in 1493.
