ROISD is present Maroon Star to first student

Red Oak ISD students receive training on CPR and other life-saving techniques including the Heimlich Maneuver while at Red Oak High School, often knowing it may someday save a life.

For senior Jesse Castillo, that day came on February 24, 2023, while working his after-school job at Hugo’s Restaurant. Castillo quickly stepped in when a patron was choking and performed the Heimlich Maneuver to dislodge the blockage and save the patron’s life.

As he returned to work, another guest asked if he just did that, he humbly replied, ‘Yes ma’am, I learned CPR over at Red Oak High School. We took a class and the teacher had us practice.”

The Maroon Star Award is modeled after the US Military Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement/service. Only Red Oak ISD staff and students, currently employed or enrolled, are eligible for the Maroon Star Award for a heroic act that is a lifesaver.

On Monday, March 27, 2023, Mr. Castillo will be presented with the award by Superintendent Brenda Sanford and Principal Howard Gatewood at the ROISD Board Meeting. He will receive a certificate and the Maroon Star Award medal. He is the first student to receive the award.

“It is truly an honor to celebrate our staff and students, and all the amazing things they do,” stated Superintendent Brenda Sanford. “It is an honor like no other when you step into a life-threatening situation and save someone through your actions! Mr. Castillo is the highest example of leaving a legacy through service to others.”
