Unity Thrift

(214) 463-5050

109  N. Elm Street

Waxahachie, TX 75165

The meeting of a daughter’s vision, a mother’s experience, and their shared passion.

My mother, Virginia, has loved thrift stores for as long as I can remember. I bounced around her first store as a baby, roaming its first floor in my walker and gazing up at the racks and shelves of treasures while my mom attended to customers and the front counter. After moving from the sleepy town of Hempstead to Waxahachie, I spent my early teens volunteering alongside her at a local thrift store as well as shopping with her at her favorite thrift outlets in her hometown of Houston. She instilled in me the love of searching through thousands of feet of rackspace for vintage and designer labels, the thrill of the hunt digging through piles of junk for buried treasures. Because of her, thrift has always been a part of my life, and a shared passion between us.

Thus, when I decided to start my first business, a thrift store was the obvious choice. We opened in January of 2018, and my mom has been a constant teacher and guiding hand from day one. I had a vision for a new, young thrift store unlike any other in Ellis County: one that catered to teens, college students, young adults and their growing families. It would be cool to shop there, and the store would have a modern but minimalist vibe to contrast the usual overwhelming variation of thrift inventory. My mom helped me achieve this lofty goal, constantly keeping me firmly rooted in reality with the rules that had served her through working and shopping at countless thrift stores as well as owning two of her own: Keep it organized. Make the shopping experience simple. Be sure it smells nice and looks clean. Make your merchandise visually enticing. Be flexible and constantly changing, updating, and exceeding; there’s never time to “rest on your laurels”, as she would say.

Today, thanks to her and our amazing staff and charities, Unity Thrift has become that dream store. We work at it together every single day. Unity is a labor of love, but it is also an expression of it; I think that anyone know knows me or Virginia can see our personalities, neuroses, and personal vision shine through the store every day. We do it for our customers, our community, our charities- but most of all, we do it for each other, and for the love of thrift.
