We Don’t Need No Stinking Goals: Monday Motivation September 25, 2023

Only three percent of people set goals, and while businesses with business plans set goals, you’d be surprised how many companies don’t have a business plan. Goals are the “how” that takes you to your vision. They are the pillars of your strategy, connecting resources to actions. Each goal should have a plan with sub-goals. Those sub-goals become Quarterly milestones or Rocks if the organization uses the EOS approach.

Most of you have heard the term SMART Goals. SMART is the acronym for specific, measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound. Some people believe in “stretch goals” that challenge realistic criteria. I endorse setting bold goals, with the caveat that a path of sub-goals must tie those bold goals to a realistic plan. Setting attainable and realistic goals can keep us in a comfortable routine, so be bold. One leader must be responsible for every goal, and that person must be held accountable. Multiple units can collaborate, but there can only be one leader.

So this week, look at your organization’s goals and make sure your unit has sub-goals that align and support those goals. Then, make sure your people understand them.
