Weary Willie Day
December 9
Emmett Kelly, born in 1898, was a famous clown who made the sad sack character of Weary Willie famous. During the Great Depression, Weary Willie represented the mood of the country, tired of the stress of not knowing where the next dollar would come. At least Weary Willie brought some laughter to the situation. Emmitt Kelly was a main attraction for several circuses including Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Baily circus from 1942 until the late 1950s. The day was created for us to have a bit of humor in our lives even when downtrodden.
National Llama Day
December 9
The Ancient Incas used llamas 4000 to 5000 years ago to carry supplies through the Andes until Cortez arrival in 1532 introduced the wheel to the indigenous tribe. Llamas are members of the camel family and can grow to be 6-feet tall and can weigh more than 400 pounds. They don’t bite, but rather spit when they are agitated. Their wool fur is prized because it is light, warm and water-repellent. They live to be 20 years old.
